I just had a strange thought about the story and characters.
I wonder if Huli-ge was a projection of some unspoken facet of myself. As a transracial Adoptee, I might be ethnically Chinese from the mainland, but culturally? I was raised very white and catholic. Sometimes I feel like I will always be an outsider from either culture, with no place to belong.
I think maybe Fox-brother was in some way meant to be an outsider in that respect. He is inherently tied to the culture as a hulijing but because he is a fox spirit he was also apart from that human culture and might never be able to really fit in.
IDK was that a problematic? I mean, there's definitely weird media history around coding and allegory and equating non-human beings to real people so there's pitfalls to be aware of.
Perhaps if I was telling a different sort of story, I'd try to lean into that angle and experience more.
